Lower Academy Director - Debbie MAtthews
Debbie Matthews comes to us to be our Lower Academy Leader at Neuse Charter Schools as a native of Johnston County. She grew up in Smithfield and graduated from Smithfield Selma Senior High School. She has over 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher in the lower grades in both Johnston and Wake County. During her time as a teacher she was a certified mentor for new teachers and supervised student teachers from area universities. While she was a graduate student at Western Carolina, she traveled with the university to Kingston, Jamaica, and mentored undergraduate students in the education program as they learned together about education in a developing country. Immediately after graduating with her MSA she was hired by Pender County Schools and spent 4 years as an administrator in Pender County Schools at the Elementary Level. She served as an assistant principal for Rocky Point Elementary and South Topsail Elementary.
While living in Alaska, Mrs. Matthews received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Later after returning to North Carolina to live and teach she received her Masters in School Administration from Western Carolina University in 2013. She has also obtained certification in K-12 reading.
She currently lives in Clayton with her husband, Ben, and two fur babies. She has two daughters Hannah and Alex that are currently living in Raleigh. When Mrs. Matthews is not working she and her family enjoy staying on their boat and exploring the North Carolina Coast or traveling anyplace new. She started her career in Johnston County and continues to be very excited to return and continue her career at Neuse Charter School.
