Here at Neuse, we follow the guidelines set by the state of North Carolina in regards to determining which students are considered to be EL.
Below is the process we use to determine if EL support is needed
- Parents complete a Home Language Survey (HLS) when enrolling their child, answering questions about the language(s) their family uses to communicate in the home. A school representative may contact the parents to clarify some of the information that was entered in the HLS.
- Next, the student completes an assessment to determine their English language proficiency (ELP) levels in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and their EL status.
- Based on the child’s English proficiency levels and status, they may qualify for EL services. Meaning, they would receive instruction that aids in English language development.
- Students who are determined to be EL students will participate in an annual statewide ELP assessment each spring until reaching the state’s exit criteria.
- The student is monitored for 4 years after they exit EL identification to ensure they continue to perform well in school.
