Neuse Charter School has about 750 students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Only about 200 of those are high school students. My weakest subject by far is math. In all the math classes I have taken here, there have been no more than 15 people in one class. This has allowed me to focus better and really get help from the teacher. I do well in the subjects that I like and I do badly in the subjects that I don’t like. Since being a student at Neuse I have learned how to see the value in all subjects, which has made me a well-rounded student.
Because I appreciate every subject, I have learned how to make good relationships with many different types of teachers. This is by far one of the most useful tools I have mastered at Neuse Charter School. At a lot of larger high schools the teachers don’t really know your name and aren’t always interested in learning it. During my time here I have been able to connect with great teachers that care about my education and my future. Having good relationships with teachers has been useful when asking for extra help in the classroom, asking for letters of recommendations for colleges or scholarships, or when needing advice about big decisions. The teachers at Neuse Charter make it easy for students to approach them when the students need help.
Having small class sizes and approachable teachers have really pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and ask lots of questions. Every time I am even slightly unsure about something I ask someone for help. Each teacher here encourages their students to ask as many questions as possible. The environment in the classroom boosts a student’s confidence to ask something or answer a question even when they might be wrong.
Through a positive school environment and excellent teachers I have learned to question everything, ask for help, and to not be afraid of failure. If I had attended a larger high school I would not be a strong student or a strong leader. I have been able to accomplish great things academically that I wouldn’t even have attempted at a big public high school. Neuse Charter School is the key to my success as a student.
