On Oct. 20th, 2017, three members of the Smithfield Lions Club visited Neuse Charter School to donate 48 dictionaries to the classroom of Brad Ward, 8th grade language arts teacher.
The Lions Club is celebrating their 100th anniversary, and acting upon their motto which is ‘We serve’, decided to give to their community hoping to make a difference in the lives of students.
“We are so thankful for the generosity of the Lions Club and their commitment to ensuring all students have access to high quality instructional resources.” said Susan Pullium, Neuse Charter School executive director. “We look forward to a continuing partnership with the Lions Club as we work together to encourage our students to participate in service leadership opportunities in our community.”
The students showed their appreciation with a large card, signed by each of the students and including definitions of words such as ‘kind’ and ‘generous’.
“The donation of dictionaries from the Lions Club means a great deal. Though we are in the age of technology, it is important for students to understand the method of searching through a text to discover information,” said Ward. “Also, by having the same dictionary source for all students they are able to uniformly learn definitions; and that allows for less confusion on vocabulary tests.”
